Midnight Sun Muzzleloaders Club Range

Snow and trail conditions permitting, Midnight Sun Muzzleloaders members enjoys exclusive use of our own black-powder only shooting range, accessible from 8.5 mile Chena Hot Springs Road, just a couple of miles northeast of Nordale Road.  From Fairbanks, take the Steese Highway to Chena Hot Springs Road, then east on Chena Hot Springs Road to 8.5 mile.  From North Pole take Badger Road north to Nordale Rd., then take Nordale Road to the "T" intersection and turn right on Chena Hot Springs Rd.  During our regularly scheduled shoots we post a sign on the highway at the appropriate driveway.

Public Shooting Ranges in the Fairbanks North Star Borough

The Cushman Street Public Shooting Range is operated by the FNSB Parks and Recreation Department and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Ranges suitable for both rifles and handguns are available.  The rifle range sports covered shooting benches and can accommodate shots of as much as 300 yards.  Take Cushman Avenue south of Van Horn Road, past the railroad tracks and FNSB landfill and follow the posted signs.  Due to its proximity to Fairbanks the range is quite popular and is sometimes overcrowded.  This is an unsupervised range so be sure to be extra careful to coordinate down-range movements with other shooters.

There is also a public shooting range located in the Chena River State Recreation Area at about milepost 36 of Chena Hot Springs Road.  This is a 100 yard range with two concrete shooting benches, a safe firepit and a trash barrel that I really wish more shooters would use. Although the State Parks Department tries to keep the access road open year round but the range is sometimes inaccessible during some seasons due to flooding.  Though less crowded than the FNSB public range the shooting range in the CHSRA is unsupervised so be sure to communicate with other shooters before posting or checking targets.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game operates it's Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range located at 1501 College Road, kitty-corner across from their offices bordering Creamer's Field State Wildlife Refuge.  The Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range is open to the public from 7 - 10 PM on Thursdays and from 1 to 4 PM and 6 - 9 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.  It is usually closed to the public during the summer months.  The Department charges the general public $12.00 per hour per lane, but two shooters are allowed to share a single shooting lane.  Although limited to handguns and .22 caliber rifles, the range offers all the state-of-the-art amenities one could ask of a multi-million dollar facility.  For recorded information about the Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range please telephone (907) 452-6862.
